It is widely used as a catalyst for chemical reactions and as a catalyst carrier because of its properties such as adsorption, surface activity and excellent thermal stability.

Activated alumina is used as a catalyst carrier. In functionally simple catalytic reactions, activated alumina is not directly involved in the catalytic process, but serves to dilute, support and disperse precious metals. More than 70% of activated alumina is used as catalyst carrier. In addition to the above functions, in some reactions, activated alumina has the function of enhancing thermal and mechanical stability, such as pd/Al2O3, Cu/r-Al2O3 and petroleum cracking catalysts used in automotive exhaust gas purification catalysts, and nickel loaded catalysts on activated alumina used in olefin hydrogenation reactions. The thermal stability range is greater than that of catalysts using diatomaceous earth loaded nickel.

Secondly, as an active catalyst, activated alumina has obvious adsorbent characteristics, such as H-H bonding and C-H bonding, so it can be added directly to the reaction system as an active catalyst in hydrocarbon cracking and alcohol dehydration to ethers. For example, in the dehydration of ethanol to produce ethylene, due to the presence of both acidic and basic centres on the surface of the activated alumina. Therefore, activated alumina itself is a very good catalyst. However, at present there are not many direct uses of activated alumina as industrial catalysts.

Why is it more environmentally friendly to use activated alumina to catalyse reactions?

When using an activated alumina catalyst as a catalyst, it is felt to be a little more catalytic than a normal catalyst because of its high activity. In addition to this, it is an environmentally friendly chemical product.

1. The activated alumina catalyst acts as a strong alkaline agent to neutralise acidic wastewater and perhaps heavy metal wastewater, making it neutral.

2. It can break the bond between complexing agents such as sulphamate or chelating agents and some metal ions.

3. It can effectively remove anions such as phosphate, sulphate and fluoride ions from wastewater.

4. The activated alumina catalyst absorbs the sulphur dioxide in the flue gas discharged from the boiler, so that the sulphur content of the discharged flue gas meets the environmental standards.

5. It can have a destabilising and emulsion-breaking effect on emulsion wastewater after conditioning the PH value.

Activated alumina not only has a catalytic effect, but also has the characteristics of pollution absorption green environmental protection, environmental protection chemical products are increasingly recognized by the industry.
